The Commercial Real Estate Finance Council (CREFC) hosts its Annual Real Estate Debt Case Competition each fall. The objective of the competition is to expose students interested in commercial real estate debt to a unique educational contest and give them an opportunity to interact with senior CRE professionals from CREFC’s membership.

Competitors present their analysis of a CRE lending decision using a case study based on a real-world transaction that is provided to them. The teams are given a week to prepare the analysis and presentation materials and submit them according to the directions given. At the competition, each team presents its analysis to a panel of senior CRE executives that judge using evaluation criteria that includes: the team’s analysis, conclusion and presentation skills.

Format of the Competition:

Twelve US universities will participate in this invitation-only competition.  The teams will be divided among three rooms for a preliminary round during which they make their presentations to a panel of judges.

The winning team from each room in the preliminary round will move to the final round where the three teams will present individually to a different panel of judges.

Only the presenting team and the panel of judges will be permitted in the room during the preliminary round.  For the final round the presenting team, eliminated teams and invited guests will be present.  Teams waiting to compete will be sequestered.

Presentations cannot exceed a strictly enforced 15 minute limit.  All members of the team must be active participants in the presentation. A 10 minute question and answer period will follow each formal presentation.
