CREFC Honors Lea Overby as This Year’s Woman of Distinction and Toby Cobb as 2025’s Recipient of the Prestigious Founders Award

2025 Award Winners Announced at CREFC’s Annual June Conference 

The CRE Finance Council (CREFC) announced today that Lea Overby is the recipient of this year’s Woman of Distinction Award and Toby Cobb is the recipient of its Founders Award. CREFC revealed the award recipients at its Annual Conference in New York City.

CREFC’s Woman of Distinction Award. The Woman of Distinction Award recognizes women professionals in commercial real estate (CRE) finance who, through their engagement in CREFC and the greater CRE finance industry, demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and advocate for a more inclusive industry. Ms. Overby is Managing Director and Head of U.S. Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities (CMBS) Research at Barclays.
  
A 25-year CRE finance industry veteran and CREFC member since 2010, Ms. Overby has held senior roles within various segments of the CMBS marketplace. Prior to joining Barclays in 2021, Ms. Overby was head of CMBS research at Wells Fargo Securities. Between 2016 and 2018, she oversaw CMBS analytics and research at Morningstar Credit Ratings after heading CMBS research at Nomura Securities International. 
  
A leading voice in the industry, Ms. Overby has moderated numerous CREFC conference panels, which draw engaged audiences, and she serves on the CREFC Women's Network Advisory Board. Ms. Overby’s team at Barclays conducts research and analysis of agency and non-agency CMBS and the overall state of commercial real estate.

CREFC’s Founders Award. CREFC’s Founders Award is bestowed on an industry professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and offered significant contributions to the betterment of CREFC and the commercial real estate finance industry. Established in 2006, recipients of this award have engaged in innovative business practices and industry activities that have successfully enhanced the CRE market and improved debt liquidity to this key component of the U.S. economy. 
  
As Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 3650 Capital, Toby’s involvement in CREFC and CRE finance spans over three decades. A CREFC member since 1997, Mr. Cobb is responsible for loan origination, capital markets, financing activities, and oversight of 3650 Loan Servicing, a rated special servicer. He is also a member of the firm’s investment committee. 
  
Mr. Cobb acted as Co-Chief Executive Officer in the restructuring, management, and sale of LNR Property LLC. Prior to LNR, Mr. Cobb was a managing director of Deutsche Bank Securities, coordinating Deutsche Bank’s activities related to the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 and associated government programs responding to the global financial crisis. 
  
As Co-Head of the U.S. commercial real estate business at Deutsche Bank, Mr. Cobb helped build and manage a team with more than $30 billion in annual loan originations. Before Deutsche Bank, Mr. Cobb worked for Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette’s (DLJ) commercial mortgage group, where he was responsible for specialty finance clients, loan origination, and CMBS securitizations. Prior to DLJ, Mr. Cobb worked at Citicorp Securities. 
  
“I am honored to receive this acknowledgement from my peers in the CRE finance industry and CREFC, which has served as a cornerstone of the market for over three decades and played a key role in the commercial property finance market’s growth and evolution,” said Mr. Cobb. “It is a privilege to be included among many talented members who have previously won this recognition. NEW YORK, June 11, 2024 – The CRE Finance Council (CREFC) announced today that Erin Stafford is this year’s recipient of its Woman of Distinction Award and Brian Olasov is the recipient of its 2024 Founders Award. CREFC made the announcements at its Annual Conference in New York City.


CREFC’s Woman of Distinction Award: The Woman of Distinction Award recognizes women professionals in commercial real estate (CRE) finance who, through their engagement in CREFC and the CRE finance industry broadly, demonstrate outstanding leadership skills, and advocate for a more inclusive industry. Ms. Stafford is a Managing Director and head of North American commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) ratings activity at Morningstar DBRS.

A CREFC member since 2000, Ms. Stafford has over 20 years of experience in the CRE finance industry. Prior to joining Morningstar DBRS where she co-founded its CMBS team and helped build its market presence, Ms. Stafford focused on monitoring ratings of existing CMBS transactions at Fitch Ratings. She is an Advisory Board Member of the Women’s Network and is active in the Mentorship Program. Ms. Stafford has also served as Chair of the Servicers Forum and as a co-Chair of the Post Securitization committee, where she supported enhancements to CREFC’s Investor Reporting Package™.

“I am honored to have received this award and feel very privileged to be considered in the ranks of talented women professionals recognized by CREFC in previous years. It has truly been a gift for me to participate in CREFC’s Women’s Network as it has so much to offer in terms of mentoring, networking, and professional development for women in our industry,” said Ms. Stafford.

CREFC’s Founders Award: CREFC’s Founders Award is bestowed on an industry professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and offered significant contributions to the betterment of CREFC and the commercial real estate finance industry. Established in 2006, recipients of this award have engaged in innovative and creative business practices and industry activities that have successfully enhanced the CRE market and improved debt liquidity to a key component of the U.S. economy.

As Executive Director - Financial Services Consulting at Carlton Fields, Brian Olasov’s career in commercial real estate finance spans over three decades. He is sought out by the industry for his deep knowledge of commercial real estate finance topics such as valuation issues, commercial mortgage loan servicing, and banking and lending regulations. Mr. Olasov has served as Chair of CREFC’s National Policy Committee, co-Chair of the International Committee, Chair of the Risk Retention Task Force, and was a Member of the Audit Committee and a founding member of CREFC’s European chapter. He has served on the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee for multiple terms and has been a member of CREFC since its inception in 1994.

“CREFC stands out among trade associations in terms of effort-in translating into results-out. The impact of CREFC on the overall commercial real estate finance industry has been profound and beneficial,” said Mr. Olasov. “Remembering the contributions of past Founders Award recipients and then receiving this recognition humbles me. I want to thank my lifelong friends in the industry and the CREFC board for naming me this year’s recipient.”

“We want to thank Brian for his dedication to CREFC and our industry. For some three decades Brian has helped market participants understand some of the most complex aspects of the commercial real estate finance market,” said Ms. Pendergast. “CREFC, and the greater CRE finance community, continue to benefit from Brian’s extensive knowledge of the market and his ongoing education of young commercial real estate professionals.”

Mr. Olasov has lectured at the graduate real estate and business programs of Georgia State University, Emory University School of Law, Columbia University, Georgetown University, Ohio State University, NYU Stern School of Business, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is an adjunct professor at New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate, where he focuses on real estate finance and capital markets. CREFC frequently calls on Mr. Olasov to teach various educational programs. He has edited and co-authored chapters in the CMBS E-Primer published by CREFC, the Westlaw text Mortgage and Asset-Backed Securities Litigation Handbook, and contributed to UCLA Law School’s Real Estate Finance Update for 2024.

NEW YORK, June 13, 2023 – The CRE Finance Council (CREFC) announced today that Leah Nivison is the recipient of its fourth annual Woman of the Year Award and Daniel (Dan) Olsen is the recipient of the 2023 Founders Award. CREFC made the announcements at its Annual Conference in New York City.

CREFC’s Woman of the Year Award. Established in 2020, the Woman of the Year Award celebrates women professionals in commercial real estate (CRE) finance who, through their engagement in CREFC and other organizations, have enhanced and improved the industry with their contributions. As a managing director at BMO Capital Markets and outgoing Chair of CREFC’s Executive Committee and Board, Ms. Nivison has demonstrated a commitment to commercial real estate finance and to supporting its wide range of industry participants.

Prior to working at BMO, Ms. Nivison was at Goldman Sachs for 22 years where she was a managing director and head of CMBS securitization. Ms. Nivison has been a member of CREFC since 2006. At CREFC, she has served on the Compensation Committee, the Sustainability Transparency Subcommittee and the Nominating Committee. Ms. Nivison has also served as Chair of the Issuers Forum and Chair of CREFC’s Women’s Network.

“This is truly an honor. I want to acknowledge the trailblazing women who came before me in the industry,” said Ms. Nivison. “To all of the future women leaders, let this serve as a reminder that your voice is important and your contributions are invaluable, and your presence makes a difference.”

Established in 2006, recipients of this award have engaged in innovative and creative business practices and industry activities that have successfully enhanced the CRE marketplace and improved debt liquidity to a key component of the U.S. economy – commercial real estate.

As a senior vice president at KeyBank Real Estate Capital, Mr. Olsen has had a highly successful career that spans over three decades and touches on many aspects of commercial real estate finance and mortgage banking. He has been a dedicated and highly active member of many CREFC committees including its Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Dan, the current chair of CREFC’s Long Range Planning & Investment Committee, has been a member of CREFC since 1996.

“I am truly flattered by the recognition. This is a great organization, and I am delighted to be part of it,” said Mr. Olsen. “Anything you give to this organization is an investment in your career and in the future of this industry. I want to thank the CREFC organization and its leadership for doing a remarkable job. The senior leaders of our industry give so much time and energy to make this organization thrive.”

“We want to thank Dan for his deep, long-term commitment to CREFC and the industry. As a member of CREFC for 27 years, Dan has supported the growth of the CRE finance marketplace and its development, with a keen focus on servicing, investor reporting, long range planning and industry-wide education,” said Ms. Pendergast. “Dan is that person who is quick to say yes to any ask and shares his knowledge, guidance, and kindness to a large pool of real estate professionals, including our Young Professionals.”

Mr. Olsen, a senior vice president of KeyBank’s loan servicing division, has managed his firm’s appraisal department, loan servicing and loan operations, workout and recovery, and loan sales. He serves on CREFC’s Board of Governors and has been Chair of CREFC’s Servicers Forum. Dan has also served on University of Texas at Arlington’s Advisory Board of The Center for Metropolitan Density.

CREFC Names Anna H. Glick for 2022 Woman of the Year

 Woman of the Year – Anna H. Glick

Anna Glick is an exceptional practitioner in the field of securitization, with over 40 years of experience in this highly sophisticated area of finance. She has worked in the area of multiclass securitization since its inception, and represents issuers, underwriters, institutional investors and servicers active in the primary and secondary capital markets. Anna has diverse experience in the area of structured mortgage finance, having participated in numerous public and private transactions involving the issuance of securities in both debt and equity form. Anna concentrates in the area of commercial mortgage-backed securitizations and has represented the issuer/underwriter in billions of dollars of securities offerings, many of which include novel structures and features. She also focuses on federal securities laws issues particular to these types of securitizations and advises on related securities compliance matters.

 

She has been recognized as one of the leading lawyers in the world of complex commercial mortgage finance. In 2021, Anna received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” as part of Corporate Counsel’s annual Women, Influence & Power in Law awards. She earlier won an IFLR LMG/Euromoney Americas Women in Business Law Award as “Best in Structured Finance (including Securitization & Derivatives)” for her work as an exceptional practitioner in the field of securitization. She has also been recognized in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, Who's Who Legal, Chambers USA: Americas Leading Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, and the IFLR1000.

Anna is also active in industry trade organizations and has served as Chair of the Policy Committee and was a member of the Executive Committee of the CRE Finance Council.

CREFC Names Lisa Pendergast 2021 Woman of the Year

Woman of the Year – Lisa Pendergast

Lisa Pendergast is the Executive Director of CREFC, previously serving as the 2010/2011 President, and is a former member of CREFC’s Board of Governors for over nine years. As Executive Director, Ms. Pendergast provides analysis and commentary on commercial real estate credit fundamentals and relative value within the private-label and agency CMBS and structured-product markets.

With more than 25 years of industry experience in the structured-finance markets, Lisa has been a top-ranked research analyst in the highly competitive Institutional Investor All-American Fixed-Income Research Team survey in the CMBS category. She has published several articles and reports on various aspects of the CMBS markets that appear in industry handbooks and academic journals, and is often quoted in the financial press on commercial real estate debt-related issues.

Prior to CREFC, Ms. Pendergast was with Jefferies LLC, as a Managing Director and Head of CMBS Strategy and Risk in the Fixed Income Division’s MBS/ABS/CMBS Group. Before joining Jefferies, Ms. Pendergast was a Managing Director in the Fixed-Income Strategies Group at the Royal Bank of Scotland, where she worked for eight years. Early on in her career, Ms. Pendergast focused on the residential MBS marketplace as a research analyst at Prudential Securities, authoring reports on various securitization structures and mortgage-related bond analyses, such as option-adjusted spreads.

is a managing director and head of Commercial Real Estate (CRE) at Wells Fargo. She has more than 25 years of commercial real estate and fixed-income experience.

As an active member of the industry, community, and CREFC, Kara currently serves on the board of Breaking Ground, a leading NYC nonprofit for supportive and affordable housing. She was also a founding member and currently serves on the Commercial Real Estate Finance Council (CREFC) Women’s Network Advisory Board. She previously served on the Board of Governors of CREFC’s predecessor, the Commercial Mortgage Securities Association. Kara also sits on the Real Estate Capital Policy Advisory Committee (RECPAC) for The Real Estate Round Table.

Kara is based in New York City and currently serves on the Wells Fargo Management Committee, the Employee Benefit Review Committee, and the Corporate & Investment Banking Operating Committee. Since joining Wells Fargo in 2010, she has held a number of senior leadership positions, including head of Structured Real Estate and head of Commercial Real Estate Capital Markets & Finance.
