Forum Spotlight: Portfolio Lenders Forum and the Insurance Company and Bank Sub-Forum A publication of Winter issue 2014 sponsored by CRE Finance World Winter 2014 85 he mission of the Insurance Company and Bank Portfolio Lender sub-Forum(s) has been to add value to its constituent through representation on regulatory matters, assistance in managing perceptions of the rating agencies, promotion of best lending and portfolio management practices and to provide an open environment for lenders to share thoughts and ideas. The Forum’s overriding goal is to provide support and access to best practices for its member. Finally, as there is continued change in the market with various regulations be implemented or soon to be implemented, this Forum is one of the few industry groups focused on bank and insurance company issues. The leadership team of the sub-Forum(s) continues to seek increased involvement of portfolio lenders, both insurance companies and banks, in order to provide a broad perspective across the entire commercial real estate finance industry. The sub-Forums also seek to engage both small and large companies in order to get a broad perspective of issues that impact the entire spectrum of life insurance companies and banks. With banks and insurance companies holding nearly 50% of the outstanding debt on commercial real estate in the United States, CREFC is significantly underweight in these categories relative to the role that they play in the industry. Over the last quarter the Portfolio Lender’s Forum has been active with two After-Work Seminars. There was a combined meeting in Atlanta with both the Life and Bank sub-Forum, which involved capital market discussions. The life companies and banks represented on the panels were a diverse group in terms of commercial real estate AUM; both small and large financial intuitions were present. The Forum was especially informative for borrowers in the audience due to the incredible diversity on both panels. The second After-Work Seminar was in New York City and involved a bank sub-Forum discussion on club lending. The program was very topical and informative to the lenders in the audience as club lending increases in 2014. CRE Finance Council January 2014 Meeting The Forum programming at CREFC January Conference is in full force. The Portfolio Lenders Forum is Monday of the conference from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and anyone interested in bank and life company issues are encouraged to come and participate. The program that is being developed is geared to all life companies and banks so we continue to seek increased attendance from these financial institutions. The program will discuss the lender survey conducted by Trepp along with other issues including the new Risk Based Capital construct for life insurance companies and the impact of Bassel III on banks. There will also be time for an open discussion with the group at which time we want to solicit members input to better focus the Forum to the needs of its members. Input regarding regulatory issues will also be solicited. CREFC’s Government Relations team is in frequent contact with the two sub-Forums, as they want to assist with any life company or banking regulatory issues, it is a valuable resource that is available to members of both sub-Forums. The Government Relations team is here to serve our members, so it is highly encouraged that we have a strong turnout for the 2014 meeting in order to get good feedback that will best serve our industry. Forum Membership Report Membership in the Portfolio Lenders Forum (Insurance Company and Bank Sub-Forums) stands at over 120 individuals representing over 50 companies and we hope to continue advances in these numbers throughout 2014.
