Non Bank SIFIs The three largest U.S. insurers — MetLife Inc., Prudential Financial Inc., and American International Group Inc. — may be designated as systemically important financial institutions, or SIFIs. If they are, each holding company may be subject to additional Basel-style capital regulation currently proposed by the Federal Reserve. Such rules could force insurers designated as SIFIs to increase fees and premiums to the extent market conditions allow, or accept lower returns than their peers. Market observers are still speculating over what other, noninsurance companies will also be swept into the Fed’s regulatory umbrella. Those companies should be known to us later this year. Last Word (again) — Get Involved! We understand that sentiment towards Congress and the regulators is at an all time low and not poised for any dramatic comebacks. CRE Finance World Summer 2013 8 But, the industry is, thankfully, spending less time in Washington. This does not mean the waters will remain calm. We urge members to get involved keep abreast of what’s happening here in DC so that their voices can be elevated above the noise and politics here in the gridlocked city between the rivers. Our monthly meetings between CREFC Government Relations and the government relations teams of our Members will continue to strengthen our collective voice in the halls of Congress. We have also begun to ramp up our PAC efforts, thanks to Jan Sternin and Stacey Berger for their fine work on this very important member initiative. Thanks to these concerted efforts and our members’ participation, the voice of commercial real estate is being heard.
