Charlie Cook is the founding publisher of the Cook Political Report, an independent, non-partisan political newsletter analyzing U.S. elections and domestic political trends. Cook started the Cook Political Report in 1984 and for over 36 years has written a twice-weekly column on politics, the last 23 years published in the National Journal. Now with a staff of five, the Cook Political Report is a publication that the New York Times once said was “a newsletter that both parties regard as authoritative” while CBS News’ Bob Schieffer called it “the bible of the political community.” Al Hunt in the Wall Street Journal has referred to Cook as “the Picasso of election analysis.” In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Charlie served as a consultant and analyst for CNN and CBS News, and for the last 23 years for NBC News, appearing well over a dozen times on NBC’s Meet the Press. In 2010, Charlie was the co-recipient of the American Political Science Association’s prestigious Carey McWilliams award to honor “a major journalistic contribution to our understanding of politics." In 2013, Charlie served as a Resident Fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Charlie was co-author of the Almanac of American Politics edition in 2020 and will be again for the 2022 edition.
