Senate Election Update - North Carolina and Ohio
September 19, 2022
As the general election is in full swing, for the next few weeks we will cover the most important races to watch this November as Democrats and Republicans compete across the country.
This week, we’re focusing on the Senate Races in North Carolina and Ohio.
North Carolina –
- Democratic nominee Cheri Beasley has a slight lead of 1% over her Republican counterpart Rep. Ted Budd according to recent polling released by FiveThirtyEight. Beasley also leads Budd when it comes to fundraising.
- Beasley has $4.8 million in her campaign to spend through November. In comparison, Budd’s campaign trails behind with $1.7 million.
Ohio –
- Republican candidate J.D. Vance and Democratic Candidate Tim Ryan are virtually tied. According to recent polling by FiveThirtyEight, Ryan leads Vance by only 0.6%.
- Ryan is leading in fundraising, with $3.5 million heading into the fall. While Vance has struggled throughout the campaign with only $628,000 on hand.
Why it matters:
- For Democrats, flipping both of these seats would be a significant win because they are both rated “Lean Republican” by Cook Political Report.
- For Republicans, keeping these two seats could mean gaining the majority in November.
The bottom line: With a narrow majority in the Senate, both political parties are wooing voters in the hopes of being in the majority, which sets the agenda in the next Congress.
