Blockchain Technology: Applications For/Use By the Industry

Blockchain Technology: Applications
For & Use By the CRE Industry

Blockchain technology has applications for use by the commercial real estate (CRE) industry.  Governments, CRE professionals, technology companies and consultants are exploring ways that blockchain technology can reduce friction and provide certainty in real estate transactions.  For example, the city of South Burlington, Vermont, is piloting blockchain technology to record real estate conveyance documents.  Similarly, the Cook County Recorder of Deeds is participating in a Pilot Program to study how blockchain technology could be implemented into current law and practice in Illinois land records, as well as how the state of Illinois could benefit from this technology.  Countries, such as Sweden, are also exploring this technology.  In fact, Sweden’s land registry authority is in its second round of testing ways to record property transactions on blockchain.  Although we are a long way off from the wholesale replacement of legacy deed management systems, recent progress shows that blockchain technology has a role in real estate.

On the private industry side, blockchain technology may transform CRE operations, including the financing, leasing, and management of commercial real estate.  For example, blockchain “smart contracts” can address many of the challenges associated with lease and cash flow management.  Those CRE professionals who want to remain on the forefront of the industry’s technology and provide thought leadership to their companies should have a basic understanding of what blockchain technology is and how it can affect CRE operations.  This seminar will look at what blockchain technology is and the various applications to CRE.  We’ll explore recent developments and make some prognostications about what the future may hold.
